Our approach

Diverse techniques can be employed to optimize the teaching of social-emotional skills

Methods

Direct Instruction

This method involves explicitly teaching SEL skills through structured lessons and activities. Usually, teachers provide information, model behaviors, and guide students through exercises to develop specific social and emotional skills. In our case, it is ZooZu, the character who was created with these qualities in mind.

Role-Playing and Drama

Role-playing scenarios or engaging in dramatic activities allow students to explore different perspectives, understand emotions, practice empathy, and develop conflict resolution skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Reflection and Journaling

Reflection exercises, such as journaling or class discussions, provide opportunities for students to introspect, process their emotions, and gain self-awareness. These activities can help develop self-management skills and encourage responsible decision-making.

Mindfulness (aka ‘presence’) and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery, can help students regulate their emotions, reduce stress, and enhance self-awareness. These techniques promote self-management and positive mental health.

Community Service and Service-Learning

Engaging in community service projects or service-learning experiences enables students to apply their SEL skills in real-world situations, fostering a sense of responsibility, empathy, and civic engagement.

Peer Mentoring and Cooperative Games

Pairing students as mentors and mentees creates opportunities for more experienced students to guide and support less experienced ones, promoting relationship-building, empathy, and leadership skills. Cooperative games that require teamwork and cooperation can also teach social skills and reinforce positive behaviors.

Integration into Academic Subjects

Infusing SEL concepts and activities into regular academic subjects allows students to practice and apply social and emotional skills in context. For example, discussing characters' emotions and motivations in literature, or how to manage anxiety before a test.

WE GIVE CHILDREN VOICES

«To give children voices» refers to the act of empowering and amplifying the voices of children, ensuring that their perspectives, opinions, and needs are recognized, respected, and taken into consideration. It emphasizes the importance of valuing and including children as active participants in decision-making processes that affect their lives.

Historically, children have often been marginalized or excluded from discussions and decisions that directly impact them. Their opinions and ideas were often dismissed or disregarded due to societal perceptions of children as being less knowledgeable or capable. However, recognizing that children have valuable insights and unique perspectives can lead to more inclusive and beneficial outcomes.

Giving children voices means providing them with platforms, opportunities, and support to express themselves, share their experiences, and contribute to conversations. It involves creating spaces where children feel safe, heard, and encouraged to speak up, whether it’s within their families, schools, communities, or broader society. When children are given voices, their ideas and concerns can inform policies, programs, and practices that directly affect their well-being. It helps foster a sense of agency, self-esteem, and empowerment, promoting their overall development and contributing to a more equitable and democratic society.
To achieve this, adults, including parents, educators, policymakers, and communities, play crucial roles in actively listening to children, assessing their perspectives, and involving them in decision-making processes that impact their lives.

Our Story

As a licensed social worker, psychotherapist, and creative entrepreneur, I specialize in emotional development, neurodiversity, and the ways children make sense of themselves and the world around them. My clinical work focuses primarily on supporting neurodivergent individuals, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, anxiety, and emotional regulation challenges.

I completed my graduate training at the prestigious Silberman School of Social Work in New York City and have continued my advanced clinical education through psychoanalytic training at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies in New Jersey. Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, helping them navigate complex emotional, developmental, and relational challenges.

I currently serve as Co-Founder and Creative Director of Zoozu World, an educational entertainment company I created alongside my partner, Charles Carmona. Zoozu World is dedicated to developing emotionally intelligent stories, characters, and learning experiences that support social-emotional development in both neurotypical and neurodivergent children while providing practical tools and guidance for parents, caregivers, and educators.

My clinical foundation has taught me that behavior is communication. Every child, regardless of diagnosis, is constantly trying to make sense of their emotions, relationships, sensory experiences, and place in the world. Neurodivergent children often experience these challenges more intensely and may require different pathways to learning, self-expression, and connection.

This understanding became one of the driving forces behind the creation of Zoozu. We believe that children learn best through stories, play, imagination, and emotionally meaningful experiences. Rather than focusing on deficits, our work highlights curiosity, self-awareness, emotional literacy, resilience, and the unique strengths that neurodivergent minds bring to the world.

In my clinical practice, I integrate a range of evidence-based and insight-oriented approaches, including Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, play therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. My goal is not simply symptom reduction, but helping individuals develop a deeper understanding of themselves, build emotional flexibility, strengthen relationships, and cultivate lasting psychological well-being.

Through both clinical work and creative storytelling, my mission remains the same: helping children and families feel understood, connected, and empowered to grow into the fullest versions of themselves.

“From as far back as I can remember, the desire to become a mother was ingrained in my very being. Even as a young child, I would push strollers with dolls through the yard and eagerly pore over catalogs, studying every detail of the tiny cribs and colorful baby clothes. It was a dream I carried with me into adulthood. Now, I have three beautiful children of my own, each a precious part of the journey I embarked on so many years ago. Along the way, I've accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experiences, not only from raising my own kids but also through dedicated professional training in a graduate program. Today, I am filled with a profound sense of purpose, knowing that I can share the tools and wisdom I wish I had possessed two decades ago with other families, helping them navigate the beautiful but challenging path of parenthood.”

How Zoozu was born. Who is ZOOZU? Why all the aesthetics?

The importance of aesthetics and beautiful images in a child's environment cannot be understated. Engaging with visually pleasing surroundings and images can have a profound impact on a child's emotional and cognitive development. Exposure to aesthetics fosters creativity, stimulates imagination, and cultivates an appreciation for beauty, which, in turn, contributes to the child's overall sense of well-being and a deeper understanding of the world around them. These images can serve as a source of inspiration and comfort, influencing a child's perception of their surroundings and helping shape their aesthetic preferences as they grow and explore their own artistic inclinations.

We give children voices.

Growing up as one of those children whose parents were emotionally unavailable or neglectful, often consumed by their own unhealed traumas, I learned firsthand the profound significance of meaningful conversations and the value of having a voice. In the absence of the emotional support and attention that every child deserves, I discovered the incredible impact of communication on one's emotional well-being. My journey taught me that the power of conversations goes beyond words; it lies in the ability to express our thoughts and feelings, to be heard and validated, and to ultimately heal and grow from our own experiences. Through these experiences, I have come to appreciate the resilience that can be forged in the crucible of adversity, and the transformation that can be achieved when one finds their voice and uses it to navigate the complex terrain of emotional wounds.

Giving children voices means providing them with platforms, opportunities, and support to express themselves, share their experiences, and contribute to conversations. It involves creating spaces where children feel safe, heard, and encouraged to speak up, whether it's within their families, schools, communities, or broader society. When children are given voices, their ideas and concerns can inform policies, programs, and practices that directly affect their well-being.
